They most likely are significantly less efficient too. They are bad because they don't output "clean" and stable voltages as quality supplies do. They are not bad in the sense they fail sooner. Consequently, relatively speaking, it has just as easy a life. And while it may do more work, it will be designed to do more work too. Now I admit, my assumption may be a BIG "IF" - but I know if I build it for me or one of my clients, the PSU will be properly sized for the job. That is, 50% load is 50% load even though that may mean 150W with System A and 325W with System B. My point is, while the demand is higher, so is the capability. As such, those supplies are probably no bigger than 300W, if that.įor more demanding systems, if we assume the PSU was properly sized for the job, those PSUs will be 500W, 650W or even bigger. Those business machines may have an "easy life", as you say, but that is because the hardware they support are not very demanding. I think this (easy life) is also a misconception.
